BOOK I. GENERAL PRINCIPLES.

Chapter V. Period of Time.

Article 138.
  • With regard to the method of calculation of periods of time, the provisions of the present Chapter shall be followed, unless otherwise provided by laws and ordinances, by juridical orders, or by juristic acts.

  • When a period of time is fixed by hours it commences to run at once.

Article 140.
  • When a period of time is fixed by days, weeks, months , or years, the first day of the period of time is not included in calculation, unless the period of time commences between midnight and one o'clock a.m. (at 0 o'clock a.m.)

Article 141.
  • In the case of the preceding Article a period of time matures at the expiration of the last day of the period of time.

Article 142.
  • When the last day of a period of time falls on a national holiday, a Sunday, or other holiday, the period of time matures on the following day, but only in case it is customary not to do business on the day in question.

Article 143.
  • [I] When a period is fixed by weeks, months, or years, it is calculated in accordance with the calendar.
  • [II] When a period does not commence to run at the beginning of a week, a month, or a year, the period matures on the day preceding the day in the last week, month, or year which corresponds to the day on which it commenced to run. In case a period is fixed by months or years, if there is no corresponding day in the last month, the last day of the month is deemed to be the day of maturity.
